I D E A S - F A C T O R Y

Three day project - After being introduced into the course, we were given our first project, the Ideas Factory Course. The aim of this project was to shift us towards the emphasising the importance of generating ideas and design proposals, be they relating to fine art, fashion, product or graphic design. To help us generate ideas, me and my table were given two words - cutting and rubber. These two words could be explored and interpreted in various ways and to start out it was important to visualise each word, by drawing them out.

In some way I had to combine the material rubber with the action of cutting or slicing. Here was when I began to struggle, as I couldn't think of viable or practical ideas that could be realised in 2D or 3D. Eventually I began looking at the rubber soles of shoes and thinking of new and inventive ways of crossing rough terrain with an all-purpose, telescopic-bladed shoe. I began to visualise the idea in 2D, drawing it out in various styles until I found a design that seemed ideal for the task. Overall I found the ideas factory project quite difficult, as I had never attempted anything like it before. Despite this, it also changed the way I develop ideas for art and design, teaching me the importance of ambition and experimentation.
